Reedijk, H. The museum of ethnology in the 21st century

abstract:

Is there a future for our museums of ethnology? Will they soon become relics of a time, when the Western 'civilised world' for various reasons found it interesting to study the habits of 'other peoples' and collect their artefacts? Or will this unique type of museum succeed in adapting its aims and goals to the demands of our fastchanging global society without neglecting what has been built up over the years? The author sketches the possibilities and opportunities which he sees and offers a glimpse into both past and future of the Rotterdam museum.
